You can apply for a laser treatment if you:
- Are older than 18 and if your eyes have not changed more than 0.50D.
- To -10D short-sighted, to +6D long-sighted or to 6 astigmatism.
- You are not pregnant and do not have system diseases (like diabetes, rheumatism etc.)
- Have no other eye disease that would need treatment first (like glaucoma, cataract, keratoconus)
- After cornea examination are approved.
Yes, we even suggest to do both eyes at the same time: this will speed up the curing process. The risk on refraction deviations between both eyes gets minimized this way.
The amount of time a patient needs to go in and out of the treatment room is 10 minutes. The treatment per eye takes 3-4 minutes. Before the treatment anaestethic eyedrops are used to anaesthetise the eyes and the patient won't feel anything during the treatment.
During the treatment it is impossible to close, wink or move your eyes, because during the entire treatment your eye is held open with a special eyelid spreader. It is normal that during the treatment your eye makes tiny movements. The laser equipment has a built-in eye-tracker to follow these movements. The tracker aims the laserbeam in accordance with the movements of your eyes so that the treatment can normally take place.
- You are not allowed to wipe, scratch, wash, shower or touch your eyes with your hands until 24 hours after the treatment. The first days you should take care not to get soap or shampoo in your eyes.
- After laser treatment for 1 week you are not allowed to wear eye make-up.
- Only after 20 days you are allowed to go to the swimming-pool or beach. You have to protect your eyes for 4 weeks.
- After approval from the eye doctor and only after 1 month you are allowed to wear cosmetic contact lenses.
The first day you may have blurry vision. 3 to 4 hours a stinging, burning sensation and watery eyes. We strongly advise not to drive a vehicle and not to work. You should avoid dust. The next day you will not be restricted in any form in your work and or social life. If you were short sighted, you might become slightly far sighted just after the treatment. When you are reading of look up close, you can experience some trouble reading. This may last a few days. If you were long sighted you can become short sighted. You will see blurry when looking at a distance. This will all go away.
The check-ups after treatment take 3 months. After the laser treatment the check-ups are done on the first day, second day, first week, first month and after 3 months. You are asked to follow up on the check-ups as planned and have to use the medication as prescribed.
The purpose of the laser treatment is to (re)gain visibility, that normally you achieve with wearing lenses or glasses, without these tools. A laser treatment does not treat a "lazy eye" and it does not interfere with other eye treatments in the future for other eye related illnesses (like cataract).
The possible remaining eye deviation can only be determined after 3 months. When the laser treatment proofs to have been insufficient, after 6 months after the first treatment a decision can be made, by the eye doctor with a check-up, if a 2nd treatment will take place/is necessary. The laser treatment is a very successful treatment. After an eye and corneal examination can be determined how successful the treatment will be.
Example: Is there a risk I will become blind or will problems occur after 20 years? If the day after the treatment at the check-up it shows that the flap is not entirely smooth or if an allergic reaction took place, then an eye-washing will take place and you will have to return to the check-up the next day. Lasik is a sort of Lameller surgery. Lameller refraction surgery was introduced in 1949. Until this date there have not been any problems noted for laser patients on the long term.
Reading glasses at the age of 40-45 is a physiologic process which we do not treat. If you are 40 years or older you may need reading glasses after treatment. When you are 40 years or older you will receive more information about this from your eye doctor.
After specific eye and corneal examination, dependent of the structure of your eyes, next to the standard laser treatment(Q-Value-Topolazer-Wavefront) you can also be treated with the IntraLase treatment (method with laser that makes a flap). This new method will bring extra charges.
